John M. Desmarais

Managing IP has honored Desmarais LLP as the Intellectual Property Boutique Firm of the Year and John Desmarais, founding partner of Desmarais LLP, as the Litigator of the Year (New York) in its Americas Awards 2023. The awards highlighted the firm’s victories in the district courts, appellate courts, and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
 
Held at the Essex House in New York City on April 27, 2023, the Managing IP Americas Awards ceremony spotlighted the industry’s leading intellectual property firms and attorneys, recognizing their successes during the past year. Researchers select the winners after reviewing thousands of firms and practitioners using client feedback, public documents, and individual law firm submissions.
 
Desmarais LLP earned several significant victories during the past 12 months, including a full defense verdict for Cisco against a $371 million patent infringement suit; a $1.25 billion settlement, plus royalties, for ViiV Healthcare and Shionogi & Co. that ended a major pharmaceutical patent lawsuit; and a $272.5 million jury verdict and finding of willful infringement for Ravgen that was later upheld before the PTAB and has led to multiple pre-trial settlements.
