Ameet Modi Spotlighted in Law.com’s ‘How I Made Partner’ Series

News

Law.com recently interviewed Ameet Modi for the publication’s “How I Made Partner” series, digging into how his proactive approach to case work, close bonds with clients, and focus on Desmarais LLP’s long-term goals put him on a path to joining the firm’s partnership.

Modi arrived at the firm as an associate in 2010 just a month after it opened, and early career in his career, he sought to prove his worth by exhibiting reliability and taking complete ownership of the parts of cases he was assigned.

“As an associate, I tried to approach every task with the mindset of being the subject matter expert on the particular issue, and – importantly – getting it done within the requested timeframe, or clearly communicating to others if that wasn’t possible,” he told Law.com. “I think consistently demonstrating those skills over the course of several years was probably important to show that, as a partner, I could both run cases effectively and generate new business for the firm.”

Since his elevation to partner in 2017 and particularly since moving from New York to California in 2020 to help grow the firm’s new West Coast office, Modi has focused on working seamlessly with clients and serving as a solution to their problems.

“I try to always keep in mind that we are in the business of helping people,” Modi said. “To do that, you have to demonstrate that you are the kind of person (or firm) that someone wants to work with – that you share the same values and goals – and that you will take the time to understand and be responsive to your clients’ needs.”

Modi’s journey to partner also taught him to expand his time horizon to ensure lasting success for clients and the firm. He learned that it is optimal when faced with a problem to first conceptualize the best-possible achievable outcome and then to put all the pieces in place to bring it to fruition, Modi told Law.com. To that end, he serves on Desmarais LLP’s recruiting and diversity committees, seeking to attract leading next-generation attorneys to the firm who can help execute these long-term plans.

“Every day, I am working to make sure that we continue to have the best and brightest people from all backgrounds as part of our team,” Modi said.
